Komodo National Park (TNK) was established in 1980 and declared a World Heritage Site and Man and Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 1986. Other distinctive terrestrial species include the gosong bird (Megapodius reinwardt), Rinca rat (Rattus rintjanus), and Timor deer (Cervus timorensis). About 70% of the terrestrial area is savanna grassland forest. Other terrestrial habitat types include monsoon tropical forest and quasi-cloud forest above 500 m along mountain ridges and peaks. The park encompasses 1,214 square kilometers of high-diversity marine habitats, including corals, mangroves, seaweeds, seamounts, and semi-enclosed bays. These habitats contain more than 1000 species of fish, about 260 species of corals, and 70 species of sponges.
